Ioan’s closest friend is in fact an old man, Dewidd, who is known locally as a wanderer and a storyteller who has more or less always been around. At weekends, in the holidays and after school, Ioan often wanders the strange hills and woodlands of Kylemore, sometimes in Dewidd’s company but just as often by himself.
